Breathe, Stretch, Unwind: A Gentle Yoga Routine for Busy Days

Yoga is one of the simplest ways to care for body and mind together. Gentle poses ease tight muscles and stiff joints, while slow breathing calms the nervous system. Even on your busiest days, a short routine at home or at your desk can leave you feeling lighter, clearer and more relaxed.

Start with your breath

Sit or lie comfortably, place one hand on your belly and breathe in slowly through your nose, feeling your belly rise. Breathe out a little longer than you breathe in. This slow, steady rhythm tells your body it is safe to relax and is a lovely way to begin and end any practice.

Move gently and mindfully

Choose easy poses such as cat and cow on hands and knees, child's pose, a gentle seated twist and a standing forward fold with soft knees. Move slowly, match each movement to your breath and stop well before any pain. Yoga is about listening to your body, not pushing it.

Finish with stillness

End by lying on your back with your arms and legs relaxed, or sitting quietly with your eyes closed. Let your breath return to normal and notice how your body feels. These quiet moments help your nervous system settle and make the benefits of your practice last longer.

The goal is not to touch your toes. It is what you learn about yourself on the way down.

Make it part of your day

A few ideas to keep your practice easy and enjoyable:

  • Practice at the same time each day so it becomes a habit
  • Keep a mat or soft blanket somewhere you can see it
  • Wear comfortable clothes and silence your phone
  • Use pillows or cushions to support your body
  • Join a beginner or gentle class for guidance
Practitioner's tip

If you are pregnant, recovering from an injury or living with a heart, joint or blood pressure condition, ask your doctor or therapist which poses are safe for you.
